Image Bank

Love (atmosphere)

In these two images the mood of love is displayed, one from the elderly showing the loving gaze through ones eyes, the other from what appears to be a younger couple, yet unable to see any facial features, just their silhouettes. Both display love very well. With the silhouettes, you can see through the negative space how close they are together- mainly only being able to see the space between them, which is minimum apart from the gaps in their chest.

Happy (Mood)

In these two photos the happy mood is displayed through bright colours and smiles. Even though the person in the first photo isn't showing her face, it displaying a happiness mood because of her surroundings. Whereas with the second one, you can see their eyes yet you can see the massive smiles on their faces.

Anxious (mood)

In these two photos anxiety is expressed by the connotation of subjects being stretched but no letting it show. In the first image someone is laying on the floor, letting anxiety show. This is an insight in the mind of a sufferer with anxiety. Yet the second one is of someone how looks "bored" on one half yet the other hands are stretching them, suggesting how "normal" this mood is for them.

Depressed (Mood)

These two images display the mood of depression. The first image shows the constant suffering those with depression have to go through. The top part of the image shows how other must see her, with no cares, not wanting to move or get up. Yet the bottom part shows how she is really feeling, wanting to move, wanting scream, yet she just can't bring her self to it, she mentally can't do it. The second image however shows a suicidal side to depression. The subjects face fits inside the noose, suggesting her is contemplating taking his life or not.
Sad (Mood)

These two images display the mood of sadness. In the first image, it shows he burning of a book. This is symbolic of sadness because it is of someones history how is burning. Perhaps someone wrote this story for a loved one, yet they further betrayed them, forming anger inside, changing to sadness then the destroying of their past. The second one shows sadness in a more physical form. Her eyes are bandaged up, perhaps symbolic of not being able to see through her pain. Then being able to see the tears streaming down her face.
Nostalgia (Atmosphere)

These two images display the atmosphere of nostalgia. Through the use of the element colour, we see a contrast in the picture held- it appears to be much older compare to the surrounding frame. This suggests the person holding this knew/ was the young child in the photo. The second on also uses the element of colour to display nostalgia because the whole filter of it appears to be someone imaging/ day dreaming back to a summer day. The use of the film is important because what is on the films may be years old.
Creepy (atmosphere)
These two images display the atmosphere of creepiness. The first one forms an eerie feel for the viewers. What appears to be a child is being masked by a paper bag. She has blood on her dress and some how doesn't appear to be scared. This forms a creepy sense because most child's body language would be much more withdrawn. The second one is also creepy in a stereotypical form. This is because what appears to be an old stair case is being watched from underneath.
horror (atmosphere)

These two images display the atmosphere of horror. In the first image a close up of a subject makes a horrific atmosphere because the subjects eyes are pure black, as if it is bringing in the viewers eyes like a black hole. Then the veins on her face are also black, showing the blood that flows around her body is black- she is inhumane.
Tranquil (atmosphere)

These two images display a Tranquil and serenity atmosphere. They are both of subjects of a distant the first one more such than the second one. Alongside this, it displays the scenery around them. This is important in forming this atmosphere because it shows these subjects are feeling distant from everyone else and at peace with themselves.
Fun (atmosphere)

These two images display a fun atmosphere, this also links with the mood of happiness. Again with displaying the bright colours it helps form this. Also depth of field is used to help this because the image is focused mainly on the sparkler (image one) and the confetti (image two). These depth of field also makes the background blurrier with is important because it makes a dazed atmosphere alongside fun- they are blocked from anything bad.
Dead (Atmosphere)
These two images display a dead and eerie atmosphere. In the first image a subject is shown, but not her whole body, only half her face and her chest. This image is a way of showing death because she is morphing into the surrounding Forrest. The second image also shows death in a physical form because it is a wilting flower, something with symbolizes death.

Empty (atmosphere)
These two image display the atmosphere of empty. In the first photo, it appears to be an oldish bus, but it only shows a small section of it with the other side showing steamed up windows. This shows both empty and trapped because the bus itself appears to be empty but the feel of it is quite claustrophobic. The second one displays empty because shoes are meant to be worn, yet in this case, it appears to be memories of people who used to own them.

Isolated (mood)

The use of lighting helps convey the atmosphere of isolation and mood of trapped. Both these images are similar to each other. A subject is stuck in a light coming form a window. This is symbolic because it shows any light coming in, they are almost trapped within it. The first image it seems to be an old room, maybe a old fashioned cellar. This shows isolation because they are psychically trapped within the light.
Alone (mood)

These two images show alone in a sad mood. They both show that they have lost a love one and are mourning them. The first image, the subject is sat on a pier looking into the water, yet we are unable to see her reflection which in itself is symbolic because it implies without this loved one she is incomplete. Then we see an outline of someone- appearing to be the lost love looking down on her. Then the second image, an man is sat on a bench holding a plant. This is symbolic because the flower seems to be a newly born one, yet this subject appears to have recently lost someone.

Connecting essay 5

This is an out of focus image which shows isolation. This photographer captured a subject covering her face as if to be blocking her self from the outside. You can also she how she is tensing her hand as she is in pain, it is most likely mental pain and she is fed up of being alone with no one else to stand with, yet it could also be the physical pain she has to put up with everyday.
This is my photo which I captured for shoot 2 (isolation) I placed my subject on the floor and was leaning her elbow on her leg. I thought this would have been better than her standing and just putting her hand on her face because the leading line of her arm would be there as it would be likely her arm would freely lean the wrong way. My subject also moved her hair over her face to cover it because it stops anything seeping through, she was unable to see anything, showing she feel incapable to see anything, this may be as she doesn't want to suffer the pain.
Both these images show isolation because it is a close up of a subject covering her face. The background of both these images are block colours- they are constant colours around them. This is important when showing isolation because it suggesting there boxed off from the outer world, we as the viewers can't see anything around them suggesting they are totally isolated.

Connecting essay 4

This photo captures depression because it shows all the names that people must have called her. All the names which have been filling her head. The pain from the subject is displayed from the distant glance of the subject. Also the fact on her hand she wrote stop shows that she doesn't like it and is fed up with it. This is an important statement because it suggests she doesn't speak of her pain, it builds up in her.
This is a photo I took. I edited it to be black and white because I found this was a better way in showing depression, its dark and hopeless. I decided to write looks of different things on my mirror that are used to offend people. I also used a vignette because this forms a connotation of having a narrow view, she is being stuck. I made it so I was the subject because was in between the words, showing the words all around my head, as if they are floating around.
Both these images show words around a subject. They both are in black and white. They both also show the mood of depression and the pain that people suffer without letting anyone know. These words are written and not spoken, suggesting these people who suffer with depression are always shut down and the more words they are told, the further down the feel they are being pushed.

Connecting essay 3

This photographer captured the creepy atmosphere in the forest. I shows arms coming out of the trees. Although we are unable to see the rest of their body. This image has a darkened feel to it. Through the editing it makes it look like a day of death. The way the hands are clawing at the trees are important because its as if they are the hands of the dead clawing their way back.
This is a photo which I took. My subject was placed to be gazing past a tree. I wanted this to show creepy because I thought I would work as it forms a eeriness in the viewer. Also I made my subject look into the camera, unlike other photos because this time, it's as if she is following us, she is looking past the trees and finding us, looking into us.
Both these images relate because they form creepy atmospheres. They both show subjects behind a tree. Even though in the first image you cannot see their faces it forms the same feeling in the viewer than the second one. The both use editing to make the atmosphere creepy. In the first one it is made darker to make a graveyard feeling, the second one has a higher contrast showing the blood on her face more.

Connecting essay 2

This is a photo taken of a creepy subject underneath a bed grabbing hold of what appears to be a young girl. This would clearly be a scene from a horror film or a young child's nightmare. The teddy bear is an important prop in this photo because it shows the comparison because the young person and the scary person underneath the bed. The age of the girl is shown by her using the teddy bear as a protection. The makeup on this person is an important touch because she has very dark eyes and looks as if her eyes are stuck on the camera.
This is a photo I took to display creepiness. I placed my subject under my bed because I believe this would be a good way to show a stereotypical boggy man that children are scared of that is hiding under all their beds. I made her place her hand on the floor because it almost shows how she is crawling her way out from under the bed. The subject is also joined with the bed frame- half a petal of a flower.

Both of these photos connect because there are subjects underneath a bed. They also both use makeup to show dark eyes and black veins. They both form a creepy atmosphere because it forms a childhood nightmare. Both these images also use contrasts between a childhood item and the scariness of the subject.

Connecting essay 1

In the photo below, a photographer has captured the creepy element with a subject who appears to be a doll like puppet with a distant look. This image also holds a creepy atmosphere because oh the contrast with the subject and the wallpaper in the background. The wallpaper is coloured flowers which would be seen as sweet and innocent for a child's bedroom, yet this subject looks quite eerie. Not to mention the puppet she is holding add to the creepiness as it forms questioning of what is the puppet looking at and what is the subject looking at?
This is my photo I shoot. I positioned my camera so it wasn't completely head on and my subject wasn't looking directly into the camera. I found this worked better in creating a eerie atmosphere. Additionally, my subject looks quite dark. I wanted her to form a doll like look because I thought this was different in comparison of my other shoots. Also many people find dolls creepy so I wanted to add this into my work.
This two images connect because they both use humans as a way to show creepiness in an artificial way, being dolls. The subjects are both looking past the camera so we are unaware of what is behind the camera. Both images also have a dollhouse feel with the background. The images also have a contrast between the background and the subjects, forming a creepier feel for the total image.

Task list….

Mindmap – with 3 levels of detail

Definition -  a breakdown of the exam paper with definitions relevant to the exam and how you wish to explore the paper, also add 4 visual examples that relate to the definitions post with annotations.

Illustrated Discussion, this should include your possible approaches- .you want to explore and examples of work on the photographers within the paper

Image Bank - complete with 30 images you can use this to record pictures that inspire you or that you want to use the ideas  ...............

Research Log - completed with at least fifteen – twenty entries and annotations….. discuss why the images were selected and how they are relevant to your response to the externally set exam  ( 5 should be non American or European) ( remember connotation, denotation and context)

Photographer Research (connotation, denotation and context)

   No4 why picked..... 4 photos..... evaluations....... influence....sum.....
   No5 why picked..... 4 photos..... evaluations....... influence....sum.....

This is a more detailed level of research  (than the research log) where you need to look at  5 photographers (No1, No2, etc.).  For each photographer, you are required to evaluate each photograph, the evaluations will require a critical analysis of the photograph (denotation, connotation and context) and some contextual information on the photographer.  If they are a known photographer (e.g. Henri Cartier Bresson, Robert Frank), you can start with an intro with contextual information about them.

The influence and summary section should only be completed once you have completed your shoots and will require you to explain how the photographer research influenced the way you executed your project.   You should include an example of your own work to show visually how your work relates to theirs.  This could relate to e.g. the way you used similar lighting, composition, etc.
·      the influence can relate to the visual approach of the photographer or technical /conceptual approach
·      technical approaches e.g. lighting, composition, camera settings, etc.
·      conceptual approach e.g. follow similar ideas

Shoot 7- Creepy Work record

Date- Tuesday 15th March 2016
Aim-
My aim for this shoot is to explore the atmosphere of creepy by making my subject look like a doll, I hope to do this by making the background seem really girly and dollhouse like but my subject looking really creepy and contrast to the background.

This is a photo I really like from this shoot:
This is an image I really like form this shoot because I believe it shows my aim really well. This is because the background looks very girly with the flower wallpaper and the mental frame of the bed with fairy lights on. Yet the doll looks very dark and mysterious creating the eerie/ creepy question of what happens next? I also like this because of the dazed look of my subject, she appears to be looking at something yet we are unaware of what.

This is a photo I don't really like from this shoot:
As I done this shoot at the same time of my media coursework, we had two different doll styles which we wanted to use. However I forgot to take images of the first dolls with her makeup on, so I got images without it and her in her outfit, although it doesn't make a very creepy photo.

Progression:
I liked the outcome of this shoot because I believe the darker doll setting really worked, even though I didn;t have the lighting like I did before, I like how I positioned her on the bed so the window light hit her on one side and the other side was darker- therefore to continue this theme, I would like to make sure that my next shoots include constant precision of my subjects.
